Commissioner Nicole Washington is a Miami-based higher education consultant who advocates for evidence-based policies that increase college completion and student success. Focusing on traditionally underserved groups, she is currently the Florida Policy Consultant at Lumina Foundation and specializes in higher education policy, financial aid, government relations and education research. She also provides consulting support for the Florida College Access Network.

A resident of Florida for nearly a decade, Commissioner Washington is dedicated to serving the Sunshine State and helping make it one of the top places in the world to receive an education. She believes that increasing the number of individuals with a high-quality degree or credential will afford them better jobs and higher quality of life.

After growing up in Akron, Ohio, Commissioner Washington attended Princeton University where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology, with minors in African American Studies and Education. She also holds a Master of Science in Elementary Education and Teaching from Mercy College and a Masters in International and Comparative Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Commissioner Washington sits on the Board of Trustees at Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU) and is a Board Member of the LeRoy Collins Institute at Florida State University (FSU). She previously served as the associate director of Governmental Relations for the Board of Governors and as an analyst and budget chief in the education unit of Governor Rick Scott’s Office of Policy and Budget. She has also previously served as a consultant for several prestigious organizations including the Institute for Higher Education Policy, Jobs for the Future and Education Commission of the States.
